Comment

CSF should be collected fresh and delivered to the Cytology lab as quickly as possible to prevent cellular deterioration. For optimal CSF sample, the time between collection and preparation should be ˂ 1 hour . ˃ 1 hour, the CSF sample may be compromised. CSF collection after hours or on the weekend, should be deferred to the next business day, if possible. If the CSF sample cannot be prepared immediately, it should be refrigerated at 4˚C. If a delay of more than 48 hours is anticipated, the sample can be preserved by adding an equal volume of 50% ethanol. A CSF sample for cytology exam must never be frozen.
